Optimizing Fair Lending: Dr. Alexey Miroshnikov’s Insights on Machine Learning in Finance

On February 26th, 2025, Dr. Alexey Miroshnikov, the Senior Principal Research Scientist at Discover Financial Services, presented his seminar “Machine Learning Optimization Approaches for Fair Lending in Finance” at UNC Charlotte as part of the Center for TAIMing AI’s seminar series. 

In this seminar, Dr. Miroshnikov explored algorithmic approaches to fair lending that promote more transparent and accountable financial decision-making. He discussed the key metrics for assessing and explaining algorithmic fairness and mitigation strategies based on optimization with optimal transport fairness constraints. Finally, he examined the role of regulations and the modeling processes within financial institutions that influence the implementation of these approaches.
