On October 25th, 2024, Dr. Chase Joyner, a Senior Data Scientist at Teladoc Health specializing in machine learning models focused on improving member engagement and personalization, presented his seminar “Building Fair AI in Healthcare: Addressing Bias for Better Outcomes” at UNC Charlotte as part of the Center for TAIMing AI’s seminar series. In this seminar, Dr. Joyner focused on the need to address and mitigate Artificial Intelligence (AI) bias in the healthcare sector to ensure equitable outcomes.

In recent years, AI has rapidly been adopted by various industries, including healthcare.  Dr. Joyner’s presentation addressed advancements in large language models (LLMs) and the biases that can inadvertently be introduced from their training data. These biases can disproportionately affect marginalized populations due to inequalities in data collection and model design. Dr. Joyner’s seminar explored the sources of bias as well as methods for identifying and mitigating bias.

Finally, Dr. Joyner discussed the ethical considerations essential to developing AI systems that promote fairness. Dr. Joyner’s insights emphasized the importance of ethical design in AI systems and called for inclusive applications of technology in the healthcare sector.
