“Using AI Without Destroying the World” with Nicholas Schmidt

On April 23rd, 2025, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of SolasAI Nicholas Schmidt, presented his seminar “Using AI Without Destroying the World.” at UNC Charlotte as part of the Center for TAIMing AI’s seminar series. 

In this seminar, Schmidt explored how AI deployed without consideration of how to measure, manage, and mitigate risks can do real harm, especially in sectors such as finance, healthcare or insurance. He walked through real-world examples of well-built models, and models that are not so well-built, to show what separates the two. Additionally, he highlighted common pitfalls, including hidden bias, misaligned goals, and structural risks that can go unnoticed, and how to avoid them. Finally, he covered practical strategies for identifying and addressing model risk, including robust model development, validity checks, model explainability, human oversight, and thoughtful design. The talk concluded with a close with a look at how strong governance practices can evolve to meet the challenges of machine learning and generative AI.
